A family budget can be a great way to handle your household’s finances and control spending. You can figure out how much extra money you have to spend on luxuries. The reason that savings are important in a budget is so that you can cater for emergencies, and of course nice things like vacations or a new car.
Tips on preparing a family budget.

Gather three months worth of receipts and average your monthly income.

Count up how much you spend on bills.

Look at your last three month’s credit card payments. Do the same for grocery bills.

Now, work out your average expenses for a month, as well as your monthly income.

You may end up wanting to cut back your expenses. If your income is higher than your expenses, you may want to consider investing some of it for the future college fees, a vacation or your retirement.

Make sure you are saving some each month.

Check your budget every month to see where you can fine tune it. You will probably find small things you can save a few hundred dollars a year on. You can save plenty with small adjustments.

Savings are good for if you find yourself in an unforeseen circumstance. Situations arise that require fixing quickly, such as car repairs or medical bills, and if you have no savings to cover these extra bills, you may find yourself running into trouble.

Reducing your expenditure may just be a matter of shopping around for good prices, using coupons in the supermarket, and making expensive luxuries a treat instead of a daily expense. Sometimes, you can save additional money by shopping around for better prices on insurance policies, consolidating loans and other financial services. Instead of going out to the movies, try camping. Sacrifices may have to be made in order to get your finances on track, but if the whole family pulls together, it will be easier than you think.

You can take control of your financial situation with a budget. You can anticipate problems and be prepared if they arise. You can either use a spreadsheet, or a program to help you. Keeping track of your finances is always a good idea.
